Government must answer questions on RFS “phantom army”

The Fire Brigade Employees Union (FBEU) has expressed concerns at revelations that the Rural Fire Service (RFS) is operating at half the numerical strength the NSW Government claims it has.

FBEU NSW State Secretary Jim Casey said today that information obtained under FOI had revealed that the State Government claim that the RFS has 71,000 volunteers it can draw on was untrue, with the true strength only 35,000 and that critically important areas on the bush/suburban interface were well under-strength.

“The Baulkham Hills district is 49 volunteers short of its advertised strength, the Blue Mountains is 50 short and the Hawkesbury is 150 volunteers short of its advertised strength.”

“This is not an exercise in bashing volunteers, who work well on the ground with our members. This is about the Government promoting a strength that is not real – presenting the appearance we are well protected from the scourge of bushfire, whilst the reality is very different.”

“This puts us all at risk.”

"While volunteerism is an important part of bush firefighting, it is unreasonable to expect volunteers to provide 24/7 fire protection. These men and women have jobs and families that have to come first, which means that we cannot expect them to be able to respond as firefighters when they are needed. The proof is in the figures - volunteers are voting with their feet,” Mr. Casey said.

"The Government needs to address the fact that our volunteer fire fighters in huge parts of the state comprise nothing more than a phantom army.”

“The Government has poured money into the RFS, who have used it to build a Taj Mahal headquarters. These figures show that the Government needs to instead prioritise resources towards professional firefighters rather than resourcing a phantom volunteer fire fighting force.”

RFS numbers false!

LABOR SPINS RFS FIREFIGHTER NUMBERS: COMMUNITIES IN DANGER

The Liberal and Nationals have obtained a document that reveals that 40 per cent of volunteers in the Rural Fire Service (RFS) are not active firefighters, resulting in some regions in high-risk areas being left without the required manpower, Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Melinda Pavey said today.

The document was obtained through an FOI and was created when Nathan Rees was Emergency Services Minister. It reveals that in the Bland-Temora Zone there are 70 per cent fewer bush firefighters than required, 30 per cent fewer in the Far South Coast region, and almost 10 per cent fewer in the Blue Mountains, one of the highest risk bushfire areas in NSW.

“This document reveals serious short comings in the state’s fire fighting capabilities, when we should be undertaking large scale hazard reduction measures coming into the summer fire season,” Mrs Pavey said.

“This is another case of the NSW Labor Government putting spin over substance, and they should come clean on just how many firefighters there really are. Many former firefighters have said they are on the books but not participating.

“There is a massive gap between the number of RFS members and the number of actual fire fighters on the ground, which may result in less hazard reduction being carried out.

“In the wake of the Victorian bushfires we must be prepared. The State Labor Government must address the shortfalls in this document.

“Nathan Rees must be held directly responsible for failing to address this serious problem.

“Volunteers on the ground are telling me that in some parts of the state they don’t feel supported in wanting to undertake hazard reduction and there are too many bureaucratic obstacles in their way.

“Volunteers have said currently 90 per cent of Bushfire Management Plans covering different regions across the state have not been approved, with some of them many years over due.

“The fact that the Bushfire Management Plans for the South East region, bordering Victoria, and the Blue Mountains are not completed is not good enough given they are high risk areas.

“The NSW Labor Government should be doing more to support and encourage volunteers to become firefighters so they can protect our communities and ensure another tragedy does not occur in NSW.

“The NSW Liberal and Nationals Coalition will continue to pressure the Labor Government to better support volunteers to ensure NSW achieves a safer target of hazard reduction given nearly 50 per cent of the target was not achieved in 2007-2008,” Mrs Pavey said.

Save Our Sydney Ferries

Save Our Sydney Ferries

SOS - Save Our Sydney Ferries

A new website has been launched, Save Our Sydney Ferries (www.saveoursydneyferries.
org.au), as part of the ongoing campaign to retain Sydney Ferries in public hands.

The NSW Government is seriously considering privatising Sydney Ferries. Two multinational private companies are now tendering for the right to run Sydney Ferries. If one wins the tender, control of the Ferries would no longer be with the people of NSW. Fares could increase while services could be cut. A private operator must make a profit for its shareholders. This means the NSW taxpayer could be subsidising a foreign company at the expense of Sydney Ferry users.

The NSW Government has already sold the TAB; the State Bank; the GIO; the Government Printing Office and the Homebush Abattoir. State Lotteries; Sydney Ports; NSW Maritime; Prisons and Sydney Ferries might be next in line for privatisation.

Please take time to check out this great new initiative:
