YouTube - Recession Busters

YouTube - Recession Busters

More than 200 wharfies at Port Botany are sacrificing hours and pay to save the jobs of casual workers after a sharp drop in container traffic.
Container movements fell from 52,000 a month before Christmas - when the port operator DP World piled on large numbers of casual staff - to just 27,000 a month as the financial crisis took hold. Casuals were hit hard, as their income also halved.
Facing redundancies, the Maritime Union of Australia approached DP World with a proposal for 250 full-time rostered staff to reduce their hours from 36 to 35 hours a week, and give up a weekend shift each month.

The penalties and bans handed down to former James Hardie executives and directors today are not enough considering the extent of their immoral and illegal behavior and the harm the company’s deadly asbestos products have caused, say unions.

Justice Gzell of the New South Wales Supreme Court has today handed down fines and bans from directorships to the former board of James Hardie for misleading and deceptive statements made earlier this decade.

Unions have expressed disappointment that the financial penalties were well short of those sought by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

ACTU Secretary Jeff Lawrence said: “It is important for the victims of James Hardie’s asbestos products that justice was done but these penalties will provide them with little comfort.

“The former directors betrayed the trust of innocent victims of the company’s products by deliberately lying about James Hardie’s ability to meet its compensation liabilities.

“While we welcome the disqualifications given to the former directors, the financial penalties are inappropriate for the magnitude of the breaches of their duties.”

Former chief executive Peter Macdonald has been fined $350,000 and disqualified from company management for 15 years. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission had sought a fine of between $1.47 million and $1.81 million. Former chairwoman Meredith Hellicar and other non-executive directors have been fined $30,000 and disqualified for five years........

YouTube - The Official Re-naming Of "The Hungry Mile"

YouTube - The Official Re-naming Of "The Hungry Mile"

The Hungry Mile has been formally re-named as an official urban space in Sydney to ensure its link to history lasts forever.
The name became an official part of Sydney in a joint ceremony held today with Premier Nathan Rees, Lord Mayor Clover Moore, Lands Minister Tony Kelly and The Maritime Union of Australia Secretary Paddy Crumlin.
The Maritime Union approached the City of Sydney to apply the name The Hungry Mile to the precinct and have it recognised as an official place name within the suburb of Barangaroo at East Darling Harbour by the Geographical Names Board.
Premier Rees thanked the Council for making the application to officially rename the Sydney wharves precinct which will serve as a permanent reminder of the area's unique heritage.
