YouTube - Recession Busters

More than 200 wharfies at Port Botany are sacrificing hours and pay to save the jobs of casual workers after a sharp drop in container traffic.
Container movements fell from 52,000 a month before Christmas - when the port operator DP World piled on large numbers of casual staff - to just 27,000 a month as the financial crisis took hold. Casuals were hit hard, as their income also halved.
Facing redundancies, the Maritime Union of Australia approached DP World with a proposal for 250 full-time rostered staff to reduce their hours from 36 to 35 hours a week, and give up a weekend shift each month.
