O’Farrell’s Laws Worse Than WorkChoices
The O’Farrell Government’s draconian industrial relations legislation will be back before the Parliament this week, where it is expected to pass into law. Put simply – it doesn’t matter how hard we work or what new duties we take on. According to the government that is simply our job, and we will do as we are told. To receive wage rises firefighters will have to find “cost offsets”. That will mean selling off jobs. We are being offered a choice – see our wages decline, or see our job cut back. It is a choice no firefighter should have to make.
The Fire Brigades Employees' Union's State Committee has approved a stop work meeting of both on-duty and off-duty permanent members to occur next Wednesday 15 June, to coincide with a mobilisation of public sector unions. Firefighters will be joined by delegations from every major hospital, many schools and other public service workplaces. Even the harbour bridge workers are downing tools.
On duty permanent members are to stand by for notice from the Union office as to which appliances and work locations should attend, and which to remain on skeleton crews. Permanent members in the regions should check the Union website for instructions or contact their Sub Branch Secretary for details.
Off Duty and Retained Members
In solidarity with on duty members, any available off duty and retained members are requested to attend the stop work meetings, in turnout gear.
