Media Watch classic: Sydney's biggest radio arseclown - on the clownshow that is 2GB

From ABC Media Watch:http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s3224660.htm

- It's my show and I'll rant if I want to -

"The cub reporter of course was the young man who attempted to shout me down unsuccessfully yesterday morning...

— 2GB, The Ray Hadley Morning Show, 20th May, 2011"

Ray Hadley of Sydney's 2GB demoting Seven News's state political correspondent to cub reporter.

Welcome to Media Watch. I'm Jonathan Holmes.

It started last Thursday morning, when Ray stumbled across a nice little gotcha that would have been worthy of Media Watch...

It was about a story that had aired the previous evening on Seven News in New South Wales, where the new O'Farrell Government has controversially reduced the tariff to be paid for the output of rooftop solar panels

"Lee Jeloscek: Businesses warn jobs will go. Reyner Eathorne is laying off four staff

Reyner Eathorne: I would not have voted for Barry O'Farrell if I had of known this is what he was going to do.

— Channel Seven News, 18th May, 2011"

But next morning, Mr Eathorne, who's a New Zealander, admitted to Ray Hadley's producers that he'd told Seven a bit of a porkie ...

"Ray Hadley: Well, he didn't vote for Barry O'Farrell, he's not an Australian citizen. He can't vote for Barry O'Farrell, can't vote in elections. Lee Jeloscek, the reporter from last night, is on the line. G'day Lee.

— 2GB, The Ray Hadley Morning Show, 19th May, 2011"

So far, a classic Media Watch get - with the added advantage that Ray has his target live on air, and plenty of time to grill him.

But then Ray loses his cool, and his opportunity, both at once...

"Ray Hadley: You're aware of the accusations this fellow has made?

Lee Jeloscek: Oh, I've become aware in the last hour, but first of all can I just say, I heard earlier this morning there was some suggestion that this bloke was in some way a mate of mine...

Ray Hadley: No, no, no, no...

Lee Jeloscek: No that was suggested...

Ray Hadley: No hang on. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Listen! Listen! Listen! Listen to me! Listen to me! Listen to me! Goodbye Lee. You seem to forget, Lee, it's the Ray Hadley morning program...

— 2GB, The Ray Hadley Morning Show, 19th May, 2011"

And Ray cut Lee off! Just like that!

Ray, what you need to do when people are making asses of themselves is give them time to do it properly.

Like this...

"Ray Hadley: I'm not in the habit of being ridden roughshod over by lightweights like you, Lee Jeloscek.

— 2GB, The Ray Hadley Morning Show, 19th May, 2011"

Because the more time you give them...

"Ray Hadley: Now Mr Jeloscek is obviously refuting that, he won't get the chance to refute it on the program. I'm not in the habit of allowing blokes like him to overtake my program...

— 2GB, The Ray Hadley Morning Show, 19th May, 2011"

The sillier they sound...

"Ray Hadley: Move on with your life, Mr Jeloscek. You won't be on the program in any short time in the future.

— 2GB, The Ray Hadley Morning Show, 19th May, 2011"

On the other hand we reckon that Ray spent around seventeen minutes that morning hashing over Seven News's little bit of naughtiness.

At Media Watch, with only 13 minutes a week, we have to be a lot more concise.

So we'll take Ray's advice, and move on - to a more serious topic, about which he has also had plenty to say.
