Community backlash as Coalition prepares to slash public sector jobs, services

The NSW Government risks a major community backlash if its breaks an election promise by slashing public sector jobs and services.

Reports today suggest budget cuts of up to 25 per cent are on the table for some government departments.

“Barry O’Farrell promised to invest more in public services, yet now seems intent on slashing jobs and rights,” Unions NSW Secretary Mark Lennon said.

“It seems every chance the Premier gets, he’s attacking crucial services and the people who provide them.

“This lack of faith with the public is unacceptable and completely undermines the community’s confidence in this government.”

Mr Lennon said now was the worst possible time for a “slash and burn” budget.

“The NSW economy is fragile at the moment, and we learned during the GFC that public spending is crucial to maintain public confidence.

“It’s not only public services that are at threat, it’s our broader economic health.

“The Government needs to immediately abandon its slash and burn plans and reassure the community they intend to be responsible economic managers.

“Thousands of people have already attend protest rallies at more than 20 sites around the state and that will only intensify if the Government proceeds down this dangerous path.
