Reminder for Public Sector day of Action - Sept 8 20111. There is always some corro from the Dept to employees in contentious times. The Union always protects members reasonably around these issues. 2. When issuing info to senior officers and staff, the Dept are often simply restating the Govt's direction. There is nothing surprising or new in this. In fairness, the Dept are hardly about to say “feel free to take the trucks, wear what you want, and best of luck with today’s action”.3. The wearing of uniforms to rallies while on duty, is the most responsible way to ensure that members can respond quickly, and indeed with many rallies and protests near or on the road, our PPE is actually safer. While on duty or off duty, you represent NSW firefighters, and the FBEU. Our PPE belongs to us, not the bosses. As a collective, we fought for, and continue to fight for, the gear we wear. It is union instruction that at times, FRNSW PPE is to be worn at rallies and demo's.4. As per all previous FBEU advice, any member who is charged, reprimanded, or threatened by the Dept or a senior officer is to inform the FBEU office, or an FBEU Official, immediately. They can attempt to take whatever action they like against our Union, but the targeting of any individual Union member/s for voicing their democratic right to demonstrate, will result in an immediate and serious escalation of action.5. Why wear firefighters turnout uniform? - "it's our uniform, and we decide when we're going to wear it.". If a senior officer suggests you shouldn't wear your uniform to a rally, or that you can't take the truck (within normal/reasonable response abilities) - tell them it's union instruction that you do, and if they have a problem with it, call a Union official, the State Secretary, or the President. It's that simple.
