Rally against O’Farrell’s attack on firefighter’s wages and conditions: Thursday 8 September.
With the NSW Liberal Government continuing the attack on the rights of public sector workers, it's time to step up the campaign.
Barry O'Farrell’s new industrial laws make it illegal for public sector workers to have their work value recognised when negotiating pay rises. Changes in work practices, taking on new duties, taking on new technology – none of this matters anymore. The only way we can gain pay rises that match, or exceed, inflation is to provide “employee related cost offsets”.
And for firefighters that means selling off jobs or conditions. So we are now facing an impossible choice. Give up nothing and watch our wages erode in real terms year after year, or sell off either jobs or our hard won conditions and watch the impact that will inevitably have on the quality of fire protection in NSW.
It’s a choice we shouldn’t have to make. So instead we need to get rid of these unjust laws.
Over the past two months FBEU members, delegates, and officials have joined dozens of community rallies, as well as meetings with MP's and local councils.
The next step is the second major rally to be held in Sydney, uniting all NSW public sector unions, and their supporters, on Thursday September 8, 2011.
All off duty FBEU members are asked to attend the rally, in turnout gear.
For FBEU members:
1. Assemble St Mary's Cathedral/Square 1130hrs
2. FBEU Speeches then march to the Domain 1200hrs (meet with other Unions)
3. Speeches & main Rally 1200-1230hrs in the Domain
3. All Unions march back to Hyde Park North 1230hrs
There will be stop work action taken through the GSA to allow on duty members to participate. Skeleton crews will remain on duty to provide 000 response. The State Secretary will notify those stations attending by Union Notice to be issued on 7 September.
This rally will be bigger than the last, with around 20,000 people expected.
Further details about this and other ongoing actions will be posted at the Union's website: http://fbeu.net/category/irlaws/.
This rally is an opportunity for firefighters to stand shoulder to shoulder with nurses, teachers, bus drivers, police, ambulance officers, and all other public sector workers to let the O’Farrell government know that we are not going to be denied a fair go. All members are strongly encouraged to attend, and to bring along friends and family to march with the FBEU contingent.
To help keep our membership better informed, this will be the first of many newsletters going out to all member email addresses. If you do not wish to receive broadcasts from the FBEU, get in touch with the office. If you know anyone who wants to receive these messages who did not receive this one, get the member to email office@fbeu.net.
In solidarity,
Jim Casey
State Secretary.
