Tony Abbott has today displayed his economic illiteracy, with his call to endanger future prosperity and productivity by scrapping the National Broadband Network.

Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union Assistant National Secretary, Allen Hicks said Mr Abbott's short sighted populism could threaten thousands of jobs, particularly in regional Australia.

"The NBN is critically needed infrastructure across so many parts of the economy, whether it be for delivery of remote health services or the establishment of virtual classrooms," Mr Hicks said.

"In the construction phase alone, it will directly lead to more than 20,000 jobs.

"But more importantly, the NBN will set Australia up for the future, locking in our prosperity for decades ahead.

"If Tony Abbott can't get his head around cutting edge technology like fibre-optic broadband, how can we have faith in his ability to manage Australia's complex economy?"

Mr Hicks called on the federal Coalition to abandon its knee-jerk opposition to the NBN and give the industry the certainty it deserved.

"The Federal Government, Telstra, the unions and scores of contractors are on board with this project, yet the Opposition remains opposed," Mr Hicks said.

"Industry, workers and the millions of people living in regional Australia need to know that Tony Abbott and the Coalition won't pull the plug on the most important piece of infrastructure to be built in our time."
