Workforce daily reports Govt to extend domestic violence leave to private sector
The Labor Party will seek to change the Fair Work Act and anti-discrimination legislation to include provisions on domestic violence leave, according to an amendment to the party platform passed at its national conference on Saturday (December 3).
Amendment 448A signals the government's intent to promote the clause in the private sector. It has already ben introduced into several public sector and local government industrial instruments as well as university enterprise agreements.
NSW Labor secretary Matt Thistlethwaite, who moved the motion, said studies showed domestic violence had a "deep impact" on employee attendance, productivity and work colleagues. Many victims did not discuss the issue in the workplace because they feared being dismissed, he said.
