Sydney factory up in smoke - again! | #FRNSW

A fire ripped through a western Sydney factory this morning - the second blaze to hit the site in the past week.

Firefighters spent five hours battling the fire, which broke out at Better Drums storage container factory in Christie Street, St Marys, at 12.30am today.

The blaze gutted the building, with a wall partially collapsing at the rear, acting Inspector Geoff Thornton, at Penrith police, said.

Firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control by 5.30am.

Last Sunday night, firefighters were called to the same factory after an office attached to the building was "severely damaged by fire", a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said.

An employee at a chemical company across the street said he buys plastic containers from Eddie Osman, the owner of Better Drums.

"Eddie's been there for a few years," he said today.

"I don't know what the cause was but I heard there was a fire in his office area."

Police and fire investigators are examining whether the fires at the factory are connected.

"Our guys will be on scene for most of the day and police will send their scientific guys over and the dogs," the Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said.

The foreman at a business on Christie Street got a nasty shock this morning when police mistook the name of the business at which he works - Better Springs - for the burning factory.

"Coppers rang me up at one o'clock and said there's been a fire at Better Springs," said Ken Dean, foreman at the company that designs and manufactures metal springs.

After racing to work, he was relieved to discover police had made a mistake.
