THE inner workings of Gina Rinehart's $20 billion mining empire will be exposed to closer scrutiny after the corporate regulator ordered her to file long overdue financial accounts and a court set trial dates for two legal disputes over assets and royalties worth billions of dollars.

JOURNALISTS union the Media Alliance has demanded Gina Rinehart stop court action aimed at forcing The West Australian newspaper and its senior journalist Steve Pennells to reveal confidential sources behind stories embarrassing to her, saying the case was a major threat to freedom of speech.
The union urged WA Attorney General Christian Porter to examine whether the shield laws currently awaiting approval by the parliament would be effective in protecting journalists such as Mr Pennells "against frivolous legal actions".
