Woman dies after fleeing unit fire

A woman has died and another is critically injured after they jumped from a burning building in Bankstown.

A woman is dead and another critically injured, after jumping from the fifth floor of an apartment block in Bankstown during a fire.

A further eight people were taken to hospital and 43 treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Fire crews were alerted to the blaze inside the seven-storey block about 2.50pm by an automatic fire alarm, followed by a number of emergency phone calls.

People were trapped on the roof and others were screaming for help from balconies, Fire and Rescue NSW said.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire to one level and rescued more than 50 people.

At a press conference at the scene, reporters were told a woman, aged in her 20s, had died.

All people in the unit have been accounted for following a floor-by-floor search, after 52 people were evacuated with the help of firefighters.

Ten people have minor injuries and were taken to Liverpool, Bankstown and RPA hospitals.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said earlier reports a woman had jumped from the building with a baby were false.

Fire Investigators and the NSW Police are searching for the cause of the fire.

Surrounding roads are being re-opened but motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
