Firefighters set off to #Palestine with fire engines

Firefighters delivering equipment to a Palestinian fire department have left Scotland.

The kit includes two fire engines, breathing apparatus and other life saving equipment.

It will take the crews 10 days to reach Nablus in Palestine where firefighters from Dundee have been helping train the local service.

They were waved off by Fiona Hyslop MSP on Monday who gave them lucky white heather to help them on their way.

Eight members of the Municipality of Nablus Fire Department were in Scotland in 2009 for training and the Scottish crews will be checking how they are getting on.

Jim Malone of the Scottish Fire Brigade Union said kit was so sparse in Palestine they had to share it between crews.

He said: "There's a real shortage of fire kit in Palestine, so we decided to do what we can - raise money through the union and other donations and try and get this kit over to the firefighters who badly need it."

The equipment includes breathing apparatus, helmets, leather boots and fire gauntlets all bought with donations from FBU members across the UK.
