Australia: Bankstown fire tragedy exposes inadequate safety measures

A young Chinese student died and her friend, a fellow student, was seriously injured as they attempted to escape a fire in their fifth-floor apartment in the Sydney working class suburb of Bankstown last Thursday. The tragedy was a direct result of seriously inadequate fire safety measures in the 10-floor building. 
The Euro Terraces building, with 144 units, is home to more than 400 residents, yet has no fire sprinklers. It is one of five similar apartment blocks in a complex that houses hundreds of working class people, particularly immigrants, as well as students.
